Yuga Labs Launches Mudwater, a New Card Game on Solana Blockchain

Yuga Labs, the creator of the Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT series, has introduced Mudwater, a new digital card game on the Solana blockchain. The game allows Bored Ape holders to use their NFTs in gameplay and plans to incorporate physical card elements in the future.

Overview of Mudwater

Yuga Labs announced on November 2 that it has launched Mudwater, a competitive two-player digital card game that integrates the popular Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT series into the Solana blockchain. This game not only showcases Yuga Labs’ efforts to expand its intellectual property but also provides a unique way for players to utilize their NFTs in interactive blockchain gaming.

Gameplay Mechanics

In Mudwater, players strategically place cards on a 3x3 grid. Players compare the values of newly placed cards with adjacent ones, capturing opponent squares if their card has a higher value. Players can upgrade their cards, and the game concludes when the grid is filled, with the player controlling the most squares declared the winner. A notable feature allows players to randomly select a card to stake during gameplay, with the victor receiving both cards.

Card Series and Distribution

The initial card series, named Swamp Origins, consists of 240,000 packs, each containing ten cards, totaling 2.4 million cards. It includes eight unique "frosted" cards along with some rare and numbered cards. Bored Ape and Mutant Ape holders can claim free packs—ten for each Bored Ape and two for each Mutant Ape—via the Ethereum-based Totems platform, while the cards themselves are stored on Solana. The window to claim these free packs will close on January 19, 2027.

Transaction Fees and Market Activity

Each transaction in Mudwater incurs a 2.5% royalty fee and a 2.5% reflection fee, the latter of which is used to purchase ApeCoin for distribution among Mudwater holders. As of now, unopened Mudwater card packs have accumulated approximately $626,000 in total trading volume on OpenSea, with a minimum price around $72. Individual cards have a total trading volume of about $294,900, with a floor price of approximately $0.87. Additionally, Mudwater offers a Web2 entry mode called "Exhibition," allowing players to engage in battles against the computer or friends without needing any cards.
